All for a Cause – How we visited 95 homes in 5 hours in a new place without google maps!

Dear friends,

It was one of the memorable and unforgettable day for me and many of us in Team Everest.

55 volunteers from Chennai met 151 Kids in 95 homes within 5 Hours yesterday (April-20, 2015) to select the deserving kids for Team Everest SMILE 100 Scholarship. They travelled 4 hours from Chennai to reach Arni to complete the home visit today. For everyone this is the first trip to Arni. Imagine identifying a home in a place which is unknown to you and there is no Google maps!! That’s what we achieved yesterday.

I wish to uncover this experience in this blog through pictures. It is here for you now to experience what we experienced yesterday:

Volunteers on the way from Chennai to Arni

The kids in the below picture volunteered to give their bicycle for others one day. Not just these two, 22 Kids in Arni volunteered and gave their bicycle for 1 day so that Team Everest India volunteers who are coming from Chennai can use it to visit and survey the homes of 151 students from 95 unique homes who has applied for SMILE 100 Student Scholarship.

Kids handed over their cycle keys to our volunteers..

We also had one more inspiring story for the day.. One of the college student who also works as a auto driver part time volunteered to drive auto for free one day. 30 of his college mates donated Rs 10 each which he used for the vehicle fuel. He took 4 volunteers to 8 homes to survey 10+ kids.  A big thanks to him for inspiring us with his kind gesture.

Once the volunteers reached Arni, we had a 30mins orientation session for them:

We also had few Zone coordinators who are parents of Smile 100 applicants. They volunteered to help the volunteers from Chennai. Great spirit!

Entire Arni was divided into 7 Zones, the volunteers are divided into 16 teams with minimum of 3 volunteers in each team.

We gave them the student address and after the orientation, the volunteers started in cycle to visit the homes.

On the way…

When they don’t know the route, they ask in near by shops…

Half the volunteer groups also walked to identify the right homes..

Yes, they finally found a student home..

We interview the family members and record their statement. It helps us understand their family background better.

They met new people like her and got chance to know about their life style..

Finally, we did it. We met 151 kids in 95 homes in less than 5 hours in an unknown territory.. It was very hot out there. But, volunteers managed it.. They do not know the route. But, they took it is as fun.

All this for a cause. We will be selecting 100 students as part of Team Everest SMILE 100 initiative and will be sponsoring till they finish education. The feedback our volunteers gave are going to play a crucial role in the selection of students.

Here is the team which helped us achieve this.

My special thanks to Lennox who sponsored the entire visit. We also had employees from Lennox volunteering for this visit. Happy to meet such people who gives their time and energy to help others.

Let’s keep making a difference.. Let’s keep volunteering..

  2. This is not the first time our team did the great job, every time i see new initiatives and inspiring activities…..while reading this blog my eyes are full of tears and i couldn’t control my self..i am proud to say that i also participated some old age home visit and donations, but i missed this great opportunity as i moved to onsite. i am a BIG fan of KARTHEE and our TEAM EVEREST. Hats off Team and Keep it up your great work. I will pray god to give us strength to change the world.

Most of the time people will not read the log completely, they just ignore assuming this is not something related to them ( i also did many times), but i request all to read Karthee’s/Team Everest’s blogs, you will understand how it is related to us and what this team is trying to do.

  3. Great work, Karthee!! Kudos to you and all the volunteers!
